Venice - Peggy Guggenheim Collection - Marina Apollonio: Beyond the Circle

"Having selected a primary form, such as a circle,
I study its structural possibilities as a means of activating it,
aiming for the best results with the maximum economy."

Marina Apollonio: Beyond the Circle

At the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on show - until March 3 - Italy’s largest retrospective of the works of Marina Apollonio - 1940 - one of the key figures of international Optical and Kinetic Art and a protégé of Peggy Guggenheim. Curated by Marianna Gelussi, the exhibition features around 100 works from the artist's collection and renowned museums like Galleria Nazionale in Rome, MART in Rovereto, and Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich.

Titled
Marina Apollonio: Beyond the Circle, the show spans her career from 1963 to today, highlighting her explorations in painting, sculpture, drawing, and environmental works. It celebrates Apollonio’s contributions and her connection to Venice, where she began her artistic journey. The exhibition also underscores Guggenheim's support of Italian avant-garde artists, notably her 1968 commission of Relief no. 505, now part of the museum's collection.

Marina Apollonio: Beyond the Circle is a deserved tribute to the Triestine artist, tracing her career from 1963 to the present. The show highlights her rigorous visual investigations, encompassing painting, sculpture, drawing, as well as static, moving, and environmental works, black and white paintings, chromatic experimentations, and a variety of media and techniques.

Marina Apollonio: Beyond the Circle is a homage to Apollonio’s adoptive city, Venice, where she lived as a girl and took her first steps as an artist. This tribute is particularly fitting as it also highlights the role of visionary collector Peggy Guggenheim. In 1968, after visiting the artist’s solo exhibition at the Galleria Barozzi in Venice, Guggenheim commissioned Relief no. 505 - ca. 1968 - now part of the museum’s collection, as a testament to her support of young Italian avant-garde artists.
