 Spotlight – Thomas McCarthy

Director’s Statement: Spotlight is an ode to the kind of high-end investigative reporting that is in severe deficit today, especially on a local level in the United States. The “Spotlight” team’s 2001/2002 investigation into the cycle of child abuse within the Catholic Church and the systematic cover-up that allowed that abuse to exist, even thrive, was so thoroughly executed that it immediately impacted, not only Boston, but the entire world. However today, the newspaper industry in the US has been decimated and there remains no clear substitute for the value that newspapers, such as the Boston Globe, provide to their readership. The situation is dire. I was raised Catholic. I went to school in Boston. I have friends who were abused by priests, some of whom are mentioned in this film. I also continue to see how much good the Catholic Church does. And how many good people, Clergy and Lay are associated with the church. I connected to this story on a very personal level and my principal hope is that of any decent journalist: to tell the story and to tell it right.
