Restaurants. I’m not good at photographing food and I hate photos of restaurants, they are usually so boring. But, I do want to tell you about four very good restaurants I ate at during my stay in New York. They all serve new versions of classic cuisine. Uptown – Sfoglia, serves new renaissance Italian cuisine. Midtown – Jean Georges’s Nougatine, serves new French cuisine. Near, Union Square – Casa Mono has delicious new Spanish cuisine. And, on the Lower East Side – The Orchard, specializes in new American cuisine. Depending on your mood, I recommend all four. Bon Appetite.

The Apple Store - Fifth Avenue. The New Apple Store on 5th Avenue and 59th street is a modern temple to design and technology. The glass and crystal cube, which takes you below street level is open 24/365. Here is what my friend Joan Juliet Buck found when her Apple crashed and she had to go underground to have it fixed. “My Mac was having a breakdown. Unknown origin. We had an appointment on Monday night, at 11.20 at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue. A young man with ringlets looked at the computer. Like all the young people who provide technical support, he wore a t-shirt that said Genius. Men started cleaning the glass elevator and the metal walls and the glass steps shortly after midnight. We wandered around and looked at the multiple iPods and Macs, laid out on white tables. There were other people at the Genius Bar with their sick Macs. It was like being in a very grand hospital where all the doctors were teenagers. The young man--Elion--said he could fix the hard drive overnight. We left it with him at 2.20 a.m. The next day we found out the computers hard drive didn't make it through the night. I am bereaved.”

Art - MOMA Brice Marden: A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings, at the Moma, until January 15th, 2007, explores the coherent and consistent developments of Marden’s work over the past forty years. The artist is deeply influenced by the places he has lived and worked, the people in his life, and the cultures in which he has immersed himself. His work is fundamentally linked to light. The plane of canvas or sheet of paper holds light. For Marden this plane becomes the stage on which to create a honed rendering of life - not a representation of observed experience, but a springboard for experience itself. Color, surface, gesture and marks – often edges and divisions – transform the plane into an image, albeit an abstract one. My favorite piece was Three Deliberate Greys for Jasper Johns, 1970, oil and beeswax on canvas.

Boutique #2. The new Paul Smith flagship store has just opened in SOHO. It seems like a strange choice for Sir Paul, but after looking around Manhattan he thought SOHO had just the right mix of fashion and design stores. The turn of the century landmark building houses all his collections, under one roof, as well as, his offices. In true Paul Smith style, the store is a mix of old and new, toys and design objects and a wonderful selection of vintage and contemporary books. Inside the store, a second entrance, an exact replica of the Georgian façade of the first original Paul Smith store in Nottingham, leads you into a series of rooms each with its own flavor. The window backdrop is a magnificent multi-striped wooden freestanding wall created by British artist Richard Woods. It was Sir Paul, who originally coined the phrase “Classic with a Twist” today, this is still the perfect definition of his style.

Mr. Key's just got back from The Rome Film Festival, but said it was no comparison to The Venice Film Festival. His latest film, Reminiscing in Tempo will be released on December 5th and is story about Duke Ellington.

Photography - opening # 3 The Westwood Gallery in SOHO, presented an exhibition of photographs entitled, Warhol and Other Photographs from the the Sayn-Wittgenstein Collection, curated by James Cavello, until November 18. Sixty photographs by Princess Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn of Austria are on show, for the first time in New York, representing the provocative, jet-setters she photographed from the 1950's to the year 2000, these include; Audrey Hepburn, Elton John, Henry Kissinger, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Since she was nine, the eighty seven year old Princess was never without her camera taking memorable private images of aristocracy, politicians, actors, artists, sports figures, and the cultural zeitgeist. Through her passion for photography, these intimate photographs offer a glimpse into the unpredictable, effervescent world that the Princess traveled. She has published three books, her first book's title was invented by Princess Caroline of Monaco, it's called Mamarazza, instead of paparazza!

New Hotel - The Gramercy Park Hotel. The Gramercy Park Hotel has recently been restructured by Ian Schrager with his long time partners, Michael Overington and Anda Andrei and with a little help from some of Ian's friends, including the painter, Julian Schnabel. It is still the Gramercy Park Hotel, but better! It represents a sensuous vision of artful diversity. ART - Opening # 2 Piper Williams was at the Nathalie Lete show last night at John Derian's intriguing store in the East Village. It is her favorite store in New York. Piper who is in first grade, is already familiar with Lete's work, which she saw in Paris earlier this year. Piper gets her name from the sandpiper bird, which in certain parts of Long Island, is becoming and endangered species. You can also see Piper in the current issue of Martha Stewart Living making Halloween candy crafts.

ART - Opening # 2 Designer and antique dealer, John Derian, who is famous for his beautiful decoupage plates and paperweights, hosted a show for French arts and crafts artist, Nathalie Lete in his shop on 2nd Street. It was Nathalie's first New York exhibition. Lete is half Dutch and half Chinese and her work is inspired mostly by her childhood memories, her travels and her joie de vivre, as well as, the bonheur that colors give her. Her work is colorful, poetic and naive, I particularly liked her notebooks and postcards with images of Parisian tourist attractions which are partly painted over with her whimsical designs.

Boutique #1 Above is the entrance to the new Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store on Fifth Avenue at 56ths Street. The handsome, bare chested male model is in the lobby to lure you in. And, the equally handsome doorman, controls the entrance with cool nonchalance. Inside, is quite an experience too. You are greeted by very, but I mean, very loud blasts of dance music and dark lighting, as well as, attractive salespeople who embody the Abercrombie & Fitch lifestyle: attractive, athletic, enthusiastic. The brand has come a long way since it started in 1892. I think this store must be added to a list, under the voice, to be seen, as it is an interesting new concept in retailing.

Art - opening # 1 Seen at the Maryam and Rolf Sachs exhibition, Wild & Real? (until November 3rd) at the Phillips de Pury Gallery in Chelsea, Youk, he is a Brussels Griffon. Youk, who is four and a half, and is sitting in his Chanel restaurant bag waiting for his Mummy, the decorator, Verina Hixon to take him out for a meal. Youk’s real Mummy stared with Jack Nicholson in the movie, As Good As it Gets. He commutes between Sankt Moritz and New York.

Empress Farah started the first Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran in1977 and one of the first exhibitions was of American artists. Bob Colacello is working on the second volume of the Ronnie and Nancy: Their Path to the White House book and he has three articles in the special art issue of Vanity Fair out in December.

Art - opening # 1 The Maryam and Rolf Sachs exhibition, Wild & Real? (until November 3rd) at the Phillips de Pury Gallery in Chelsea, showed a selection of the Wild Emperor photographs, as well as, wild and real surreal objects. The Wild Emperor is the first collaborative photography project by Maryam and Rolf Sachs. Over a one year period, every 10.5 minutes, a stationary camera photographed the changing moods of the “Wilde Kaiser” mountain range in Austria. A total of 47.739 images were taken. Maryam and Rolf Sachs are photographed on the Rechenau Pair of Chairs, 2005, cast in bronze by Rolf from the originals by Pineapple, the chairs appear in the foreground of the landscapes.

People - photographer # 3. Photographer, Scott schuman is at work on the streets of New York City, taking pictures for his very successful, people on the street fashion blog, The Satorialist. The blog receives between 17,000 to 30,000 visits a day. Scott still doesn't consider himself a photographer, he has had no formal training, he learnt it all from looking at magazines and practicing on his two young daughters Isabel and Claudia while he was a stay at home dad. His blog pages have been enlarged and placed in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue and during the European fashion shows he took pictures on the streets of London, Milan and Paris for Style.com, for whom he is also doing videos. And, if that isn't enough, he has a monthly blog page in GQ magazine, as well as, many more ideas to develop. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about The Satorialist.

A Bakery For the past thirty years this used to be a classic family bakery, but it ran out of generations who wanted to cook. Build a Green Bakery took it over and made a model environmentally friendly bakery. Everything is made of sustainable, renewable, biodegradable, recycled, recylable, vintage and found materials. The floor is made of cork and the walls are made of wheat - just like the baked goods. The paint is milk protein, the table is bamboo and recycled denim....... People - Music This is the story of Miki Singh, or Jeet for his friends. He is the lead singer of the band, Dragonfly. When Jeet, who is half Indian and half Indonesian, graduated from MIT he formed a computer company with two class mates. He was one of the first original dot comers to cash in on the tech stock craze, this made him the 23rd richest man under forty on the Forbes list a few years ago. He left the company, changed lifestyle and bought a seventy acre estate in Saint Barths where he devotes his time to writing music. He is currently touring the U.S.A. and Europe with the release of his second album, called Blind, which blends traditional Indian instruments with the bands high energy and funk sounds. It was presented in New York at The Annex with a hip party of friends from St Barths, downtowners and rock and rollers. It was so much fun. The CD is bound to have a lot of success.

People + Benefit - photographer # 2. Glamorous photographer, Andrea Blanch is very happy with her photographic exhibition at the Staley Wise Gallery in SOHO, entitled Unexpected Company. The unexpected company are a series of photo-montages of boobs. Part of the proceeds will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The photo-montages are part of a personal project which she hopes to turn into a book "I thought it was the best way of presenting the issue." she said. Blanch began her career as a photographer's assistant for Richard Avedon. And one of her books has the amusing title Italian Men love Sex and was published by Rizzoli.

A dinner party. When it comes to food and table settings the maestro is Tiffany & Co's, John Loring, he has written books about both subjects. He is also a very good cook. The menu, the table settings, as well, as the company were both, New York meets International. Jack, as he is known by his oldest friends, has always been a man of the world, he is widely traveled and has owned houses in some the major capitals of Europe. The food, as you can imagine, was also exotic, inspired by Italy meets Creole. And, the chic table setting, an eclectic mix, of Tiffany & Co meets Sweden via Malaysia. Let me just point out, the blue and white plates designed by John Loring himself for Tiffany's and inspired by Portuguese seventeenth century tiles. Hot off the press is Loring's latest book, Tiffany Pearls. Never still, he was en route for Demark were for the past ten years, he has been designing and lighting the Tivoli winter garden.

People - cook book authors. Seen at the Greenmarket in Union Square, Roy Finamore and Susan Simon with Allegra. Roy and Susan meet up every Saturday and walk to the Greenmarket in Union Square, not only for the fresh seasonal vegetables, but also to meet and chat to their friends in the food business. They bumped into; Hearth's chef, Marco Canora, Gourmet magazine's food editor, Kemp Minifie and Sfoglia's Ron Suhanosky. Roy Finamore's latest cook book is called Tasty. He is currently preparing a neo-classical Christmas menu for the new food website called Chow.com. Susan Simon, who is best know for her Nantucket cook books, is currently working on The Lombardy Kitchen, which will also include recipes by Italian celebrities from the worlds of fashion and design. She has recently been doing volunteer work for Spoons across America. Conducting tours of the greenmarkets of New York for school children to teach them about the importance of locally grown fresh products. I always enjoy the buss on market days in Union Square and love to shop for bread, jellies, flowers and fruit and vegetables.

People - gentleman salesman. Seen at the Greenmarket in Union Square, Joe Ades. As I was crossing the street, my eye caught this gentleman sitting on a small stool in a cashmere v neck, wearing an impeccably cut tweed jacket and corduroy pants, the perfect Saturday morning attire, selling vegetable peelers with a slight English accent. Vanity Fair magazine, dedicated five pages to Mr. Ades, calling him the The Gentleman Grafter. He is well know for his double lifestyle. When he is not selling his wares on the street he retires to his Park Avenue apartment and at night he can be spotted with his fourth wife, drinking champagne at Cafe Pierre. When I tried to interview him, he told me that he couldn't speak as he has to make a living, and carried on with his fascinating sales pitch.

People - photographer #1. Seen in Union Square, The New York Times's legendary social and fashion photographer, Bill Cunningham. Bill made the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue famous by standing there, day in and day out, come rain or come shine, photographing trendy ladies for his Sunday column "On the Street". He is one of the sweetest and most gentle people I know and I always thought it quite charming that he addresses his subjects, as "Child". His knowledge of fashion is outstanding as he has been watching, chronicling and trend-spotting the fashion scene with his Nikon for decades.

Art It is so great to be back in New York and I just could not wait to go and see the Sky Mirror made by British sculptor, Anish Kapoor. It was the first item on my, to do list in NYC. It didn't disappoint me either, in fact it is awesome. The three stories high, 35-foot-diameter mirror is made of polished stainless steel and weighs 23-ton. It is brilliantly installed at the Fifth Avenue entrance to the Channel Gardens of the Rockefeller Center. It is placed so that the concave side reflects an upside-down view of the surrounding skyscrapers and on the other side, the convex side, the mirror reflects the busy street-scape of midtown Manhattan. Kapoor describes the Sky Mirror as a "non-object, a sculpture that, despite its monumentality, suggests a window or void and often seems to vanish into its surroundings." With such a perfect location it seems a pity that it can't stay there permanently.

Missoni - It was so nice to finish Milan fashion week with a high. The Missoni show was fantastic and I can't wait to place an order, brava Angela Missoni. Fashion Passion, was the title of the collection which was full of surprises, amongst these the important come-back of feminine and fluid co-ordinates. The emphasis was on playing with pieces which are visually and chromatically in tune. The scarf from accessory, becomes a new important item when it is wrapped across the body. All in the patterns of the Missoni tradition.

Two very new restaurants and two bars, all in one - Gold. Situtated in DolceandGabbanaland, behind their office building and their theatre and not too far away from their stores in the centre, is the new first concept Dolce & Gabbana restaurant called Gold with a BIG O. I really should mention, that it is actually two restaurants, one is a bistrot (see above) open from 7.30 for breakfast right through to 2 am. and the other is a five star restaurant open in the evening. There are also two bars in the building, a regular coffee bar and a cocktail bar. The decor is gold, white, airy and so cool. It's called Gold, because gold is an upbeat sunny color. The color of energy, luxury and a new dolce vita, which also signifies a taste for beauty and for sensual pleasure. There is also an extensive smoking section, food, desserts and wines can be carried home in a chic gold shopping bags. But before you go home you must go downstairs to the toilets and see the surprise behind the doors of the loos.....Genius, bravo Domenico, who designed it with a pool of 20 architects.

Domenico Dolce was walking to his boutique in Via della Spiga, talking on his cool, gold Motorazr V3i Dolce & Gabbana cell phone which also features a DG lanyard, ringtones, screen savers and wallpaper. While Domenico walks around town, Stefano Gabbana likes to drive his Vespa, I wonder if that is gold too? Both designers were the stars of Motorola's successful advertising campaign. The Duomo. "This billboard is too sexy for the Duomo!" Should a scared place be used for advertising and if so, maybe it shouldn't be a model with her skirt flying, revealing lots of leg? Chapeaux to Canon, for them it was a coup, because they got twice the amount of publicity from it. Canon was the official sponsor for the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. I have to thank Canon, because I love their cameras both the professional ones, which I have been using for over 15 years, as well as, the compact ones. In fact, I use the Ixus, photographed above for this blog. Also thanks to the Camera della Moda for their hospitality in the press room during the shows.

Christian Stein Gallery. Seen at the Mimmo Paladino exhibition. Famous Sculptor, Arnaldo Pomodoro and sister Teresa were among the guests at the Mimmo Paladino exhibition at the Christian Stein Gallery. The Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro is hosting the Jannis Kounellis exhibition (until February 24, 2007) which is one of four big exhibitions with openings during fashion week. The other two are the Tamara de Lempicka at Palazzo Reale (until January 14th, 2007) and The Jean Michel Basquiat Show at the Palazzo della Triennale (until January 28, 2007). The shows are part of the program Milano Vive - Milan Lives - organized by the Milan Town Hall. Fashion and art, what a treat, pity there wasn't enough time to see and do everything.

Christian Stein Gallery. Mimmo Paladino exhibition.International painter, sculptor and art designer, Mimmo Paladino had a double opening in Milan during Fashion week. He is photographed above in front of his sculptures of human relics at the Christian Stein Gallery (on show until November 25th). Paladino is promoting his first film called Quixote, which he conceived, directed and wrote the screenplay. The original score is by Lucio Dalla, who also plays the part of Sancho. And, art lovers look out for Merlin the Wizard who is played by fellow artist, Enzo Cucchi. "I've always believed that a movie cannot replace painting neither superimpose on it. Still, if you look through the lens, in the rectangle of the camera you can figure the space of canvas. To create a movie is something similar to sculpture, it's like molding the light. That's what won me over. To work with the light that materializes, becomes image, movement, words, sounds." Paladino explains about his debut into films.

Seen at the Missoni party. The New York Times Style Magazine editor, Stefano Tonchi, was talking to controversial video artist, Francesco Vezzoli. And, guess what they were talking about? It wasn't about art and it wasn't about fashion, it was about Men! Vezzoli is working on two video projects, one for the Wexner Centre For Arts in Ohio and the other for The Power Plant in Toronto.

It was held for the eighteenth birthday of cousins, Teresa and Giacomo Missoni at the Permanente museum. With their young and beautiful friends they fooled around and danced to loud disco music till the early hours.
