Venice – Arsenale: The 16th International
Architecture Biennale Exhibition

“The
divide between architecture and civil society, caused by the latter's increasing
difficulty in expressing its own needs and finding appropriate answers, has led
to dramatic urban developments whose main feature is the marked absence of
public spaces, or the growth of other areas dominated by indifference in the
suburbs and peripheries of our cities. The absence of architecture makes the
world poorer and diminishes the level of public welfare, otherwise reached by
economic and demographic developments. To rediscover architecture means to
renew a strong desire for the quality of the spaces where we live, which are a
form of public wealth that needs to be constantly protected, renovated and
created.”

At the Arsenale the president of the Biennale di Venezia, Paolo
Baratta declares the 16 International Biennale Architecture, 2018, with the
title Freespace and curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara open, until

“We chose the
theme of Freespace, because we believed in the cultural component within
architecture that is beyond the brief, beyond the need. We asked architects
around the world to try to represent that, to be understood, and to challenge
people to find the free space within their work and projects.”

The
Arsenale: Corderie + Artigliere
“For
us, the building itself can be considered as an active participant in this
Exhibition. The totality of the heroic structure and space is
revealed as an act of celebration of its uniqueness as a
space in Venice. The 317m-long central aisle of the Corderie once a place of work is now imagined as a place of social exchange and conversation. In the first room, we project drawings of the building onto the walls, showing the scale and the DNA of the building, both above and belowground.”

“Markings
on the floor along the central aisle of the Corderie give a sense of measure
and dimension in both metric and historic Venetian feet. Animated words from
the Freespace Manifesto are projected onto the ceiling, as if reflected on
water. Bathed in the ethereal Venetian light of the Corderie and the
Artigliere, and outside too, you will find sixty-five participants, invited to
exhibit their response to a component of the Manifesto. Each has emphasized an
aspect of their work, such as, culture, materiality, space for opportunity,
movement, time, memory and Nature's gifts. As a visitor, you are invited to consider,
discuss, examine and engage with these exhibits.”

stand still. Through the High Line I’ve come to terms with the notion that one
steps into a city at some point in the death, decay and rebirth cycle.”

“Architecture is not making something against nature, we don’t need
to protect ourselves from it. So we try to find a way to appreciate nature. We
try to bring nature into the room.”

“Authorship. This is part of the transformation of
architecture as a discipline. You no longer have to adhere to a movement that has
a name, you can have your own voice.”

“Our works evoke themes and stories but the ideas we pursue do not succumb to literal translations into architecture, but are transformed by the sublime and ridiculous aspects of a design practice into the architectural realm. We see this transformation as exaggeration.”

“Our work is coherent, consistent, always doing the same thing. How to create a relation between the inside and outside, this is very important for us to think about. And also proportion. I mean not ‘good proportion’ but the size and if it fits into that area.”
