LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Dupont Corian and Intramuros


New York – May 16th - DuPont Corian and Intramuros.  The French design magazine, Intramuros and Dupont Corian invited the designers who have been featured on the cover of the magazine to transform an A4 sheet of Corian Designer White to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the magazine.   This collection of 25 original works makes up the Carte Blanche exhibition, which can be seen in the Dupont Corian Design Studio until July 2nd.

Carte Blanche/Patricia Urquiola.  Carte Blanche designed by Patricia Urquiola “An overlap of layers, almost dug in the material, gives an impression of deepness and irregularity, with different degrees of transparency.  The sharp light and the shadows emphasize the relief of the pattern.”

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Dror and Fenom


New York - May 16th – Dror and Fenom.   The party for the launch of Dror and Fenom was held in the Yigal Azrouel boutique in the Meatpacking District.  Fenom, from phenomenon, is the first modern absinthe, it’s smooth and lightly aromatic taste is handcrafted from traditional herbs.

The Designer of the bottle. Dror Benshetrit, or just Dror as he is better know,  was responsible for the design and branding of Fenom.  “The mirror has many unusual properties that when applied to the standard shape of a bottle, give an individual the unique ability to interact with it.  In a larger atmosphere, the bottle can capture the image of the entire party from its distant spot.” Dror explained.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Design Within Reach


New York - May 16th – Design Within Reach.   Design Within Reach introduced the 111 Navy Chair, made from 111 recycled plastic Coke bottles, the production of the chair is expected to keep three million plastic bottles out of landfills each year.  The project is the result of the collaboration between Emeco and Coca-Cola.  The chair is a plastic version of the iconic 1006 Navy Chair and is designed to have the attributes of the original aluminum version; strength, comfort and durability.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Greenpointworks


New York - May 16th – Greenpointworks.   Sam Bargets is one of two designers at Greenpointworks.   He was showing their classic Acapulco chair, which is hand made in Brooklyn, directly from a truck in the Meatpacking District.


The Acapulco chair.  The classic Acapulco chair was designed in the 1950s in the Mexican beach town.  While the chair is prolific in Mexico and exists in many different shapes and sizes, it’s original designer is unknown. “A couple of years ago we found some great ones on a trip to Mexico and shipped them home to Brooklyn.  Everyone was so delighted by these excellent chairs that we decided to build them ourselves here in Greenpoint.” Sam explained.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Moss - Moroso


New York - May 15th – Moss – Moroso openings. At Moss an exhibition entitled, Poetic License, deliberate deviations from normally applicable rules and practices. Design entrepreneur, Murray Moss greets Ruth Shuman and legendary designer and artist, Gaetano Pesce.



Seen at Moss.    Moss presents a gallery-wide celebration of rule breaking, envelope pushing and taking chances. The work of each of the designers featured in Poetic License personifies the attribute by which the exhibition is defined. Each pushes the boundary of what’s been done before in a variety of media, and each invents new forms, new processes, new methodologies. Among the designers featured: Fernando and Humberto Campana, Michele De Lucchi, Mathias Bengtsson, Oskar Zieta, Francois Roche and others.
Above. Pressure-formed Steel Furniture by Oskar Zieta, a collection of stools created through FIDU free inner pressure deformation, a manufacturing process developed by the Polish designer and engineer, whereby welded steel sheets are industrially inflated.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Partners and Spade


New York May 15th - Partners and Spade.   Andy Spade and Anthony Sperduti’s, Partners and Spade on Great Jones Street in the NoHo is a storefront and studio. The studio produces films, books, apparel and conceptual products as well as marketing and branding projects. The storefront, presents a constantly re-imagined group show of artwork, objects, collections and ideas and is a unique space for art happenings and special gatherings.
Above. The Fixed Gear Bike designed by Benedict Radcliffe of Fixed Gear London comes in dayglo colors and is and exclusive product to Partners and Spade.



Partners and Spade – Axes.  The Best Made Co. axes are made by hand in NYC, and sold exclusively in the store.  The Best Made Company was founded on the principle that a well made object can enlighten, entertain, and inspire. Everything they sell is simply "the best made" product they can make or find.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Sam Baron


New York - May 15th – Sam Baron. Standing right in front of the real thing, Sam Baron, art director at the Benetton design research center Fabrica presented a series of his glass sausages in the window of the Japan Premium Beef butchers shop in NOHO.



The Sausages. In the butcher’s window Baron’s decorative glass sausages blur the lines between art gallery and meat market. Ironically, the storefront was once owned by Andy Warhol.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK - Christopher Young



New York - May 15th – Christopher Young. Renowned artist and filmmaker, Christopher Young was painting and personalizing his creative and colorful tattoo designs on selected Nook cases at the Union Square branch of the Barnes and Noble bookstore this morning. Young is known for his Tattoo designs for Harry Winston, his high-concept transformation of traditional sailor tattoos into a dazzling array of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

New York - May 14th – Minimal.   Party for the opening of Minimal USA showroom in Chelsea’s Art District.  Minimal USA’s Bartolomeo Bellati with one of the two founding brothers of Minimal Italy, Fabio Zanette.  The founders design philosophy is to provide bespoke solutions that creatively mold architectural form, unique materials and technological hardware with the utmost attention to detail.

A detail of Andrew Alpern’s tie.  Symbolically the Fornasetti tie is special to  Andrew  who has collected the largest collection of architectural drawing instruments which he has donated to the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University. On Monday May 17th he will be signing copies of the catalogue at the university from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
